Counselling for Children and Young People Experiencing Loss and Bereavement
Every 30 minutes, a parent of a child under 16 dies!
53 children lose a parent every day!
2 young people under 16 lose a parent every hour of every day!
4% of 5-16 year olds have experienced the death of a parent, brother or sister. In Wigan this equals 1,810.
Bereavement in childhood is a risk factor for later difficulties. Anxiety, depression, teenage pregnancies and involvement in crime.
The risk can be reduced by good early management, someone to talk to.
The aim of our service is to provide counselling to children and young children aged 5-19. To help them understand and cope with their loss and to promote health and wellbeing of each child.
The service provides direct access to counselling for those children and young people experiencing loss and bereavement throughout the Borough of Wigan.
The project runs from Monday to Friday with some provision for out of hours sessions. The service is open to all children/young people. All you need to do is ring and make a referral.
After the initial session if we can help (some people may need more help than we can give) appointments will be made for as long as the child/young person needs help.
